Creating a visual mission statement
Project: As the final project for my degree program, I chose to create a series of environmental graphics for the front lobby and hallways of a nearby elementary school that would visually represent the different parts of a mission statement poem that I wrote:
Travel the mountains,
Explore underseas;
Let knowledge equip you,
For life's mysteries.
Approach: Going to school day in and day out as a child is tough business, especially for so many years. Learning is necessary, yes, but can be tedious and difficult. I decided to write a new mission statement that would hopefully speak to the students directly and help remind them of why they show up every day. I chose a storybook style for the illustrations that would complement the words and energize the school entrance, yet through the softer style, would not be visually fatiguing over the long haul. The school mascot served as the character for each of the scenes.
